Nigeria: A Sovereign Nation Without Foreign Military Bases

Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), has refuted allegations of the existence of a French military base in Nigeria.

This response comes in light of statements made by Abdulrahman Tchiani, Niger’s military leader, who suggested that Nigeria is working with France to create instability in Niger.

In a BBC Hausa interview, Ribadu labeled the accusations as unfounded. Tchiani’s claims surfaced during a time of increased tensions between Nigeria and Niger, particularly after Niger, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, decided to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“President Tchiani understands Nigeria well, but I encourage journalists to visit the locations he mentioned and ask local residents about the presence of foreign soldiers,” Ribadu stated.

He assured that Nigeria does not pose a risk to Niger and highlighted the importance of both countries working together to tackle shared security challenges, especially the threat from terrorist groups operating in the region.

“The military leadership in Niger should realize that our true enemy is terrorism, not Nigeria. We should unite in addressing this issue,” he remarked.

Ribadu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening its relationship with Niger, emphasizing their common heritage and interests.

“Nigeria will maintain collaborative efforts with Niger because both nations and their peoples are interconnected,” he noted. “Together, they should work towards the advancement of their communities.”

The NSA’s statements strive to alleviate the growing tensions and misconceptions between the two neighboring countries as they face regional security and political dilemmas.
