At an event to commemorate the one year anniversary of Professor Chukwuma Soludo as the Governor of Anambra State, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo revealed that he had initially been against the idea of Soludo running for the position. He had envisioned Soludo taking on a role of greater national or international importance. Obasanjo’s experience with the then-governors of Anambra, Dr Chris Ngige and Emmanuel Uba (Andy Uba), had led him to believe that only hooligans would take over the state. However, he eventually allowed Soludo to pursue the governorship, but warned him not to forget that he had reserved him for a higher purpose.
Obasanjo praised Soludo’s performance as Governor, saying he had not disappointed either himself or the people of Anambra State. Soludo had served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria between 2004 and 2009, including during Obasanjo’s presidency.
