House of Reps Member Meets Nnamdi Kanu Despite DSS Blockade
Obi Aguocha, the representative for Ikwuano, Umuahia North and South in the House of Representatives, has successfully met with Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite restrictions by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The meeting occurred on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at the DSS facility located in Abuja.
Kanu had previously requested that Justice Binta Nyako step down from presiding over his trial, expressing doubt regarding her impartiality.
As a result of his courtroom actions, the DSS restricted Kanu’s access to his legal representatives, an issue highlighted by his lead lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.
During their encounter, Aguocha informed Kanu about the blockade and the associated developments.
According to a statement from Aguocha’s Media Office, they reached a resolution allowing Kanu’s lawyers to access him.
In the released statement, Aguocha shared, “Recently, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers contacted me regarding the ongoing issues they faced in accessing their client. They sought my assistance in addressing this matter promptly.
“I took immediate action and wrote to the DSS and the Honourable Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, requesting urgent intervention.
“The dialogue that followed was constructive, and I learned from the DSS that the restriction on access was linked to Kanu’s legal team’s request for the judge to withdraw, which involves further legal proceedings known to both sides. I also met Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on October 24, accompanied by family member Ms. Ezioma Stella Ikpo, to discuss these matters.
“As a result, we agreed that Kanu’s lawyers would be permitted to meet him moving forward.
“Kanu is in good spirits and remains strong. I appreciate the dedication of the new DSS leadership in addressing Kanu’s healthcare needs, affirmatively responding to his request for private medical care. He received such attention as recently as October 3, 2024.
“I am grateful for the prompt action by the Honourable Speaker, which has significantly aided in achieving these advancements.
“It is important to uphold Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s rights as recognized by the 1999 Nigerian Constitution and relevant United Nations declarations.
“I acknowledge the dedication of Kanu’s legal team and commend their professionalism throughout this process.”
Aguocha expressed optimism for a political resolution that could lead to Kanu’s release.
