Ikedi Ohakim
Ikedi Ohakim, the former governor of Imo State, has denied claims regarding a supposed initiative to appoint him as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the principal socio-cultural group for the Igbo people.
Following the passing of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the previous President-General, in July at the age of 82, there has been speculation about his successor.
In a statement released on Monday, Ohakim emphasized his lack of interest in assuming any leadership role within Ohanaeze, stressing that his current focus is on honoring Iwuanyanwu’s memory appropriately.
He called on those spreading rumors about his potential election to cease such activities.
In his statement, he noted: “I have been made aware of a media report associating me with efforts to position me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo; resulting in numerous inquiries from concerned Nigerians seeking clarity.
“To clarify: I am unaware of any intentions to elect or appoint me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. No one has reached out to me, and I have not expressed any desire for the position.
“I ask those disseminating this harmful and irresponsible misinformation to stop, allowing the Igbo people to mourn and reflect on the legacy of the late Ahaejiagamba, which fostered peace and harmony within our community and among the Igbo people.
“I restate: I have no interest or involvement in the presidency of Ohanaeze Ndigbo at this time.”
