A committee led by Gov Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been set up to oversee the shift of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Ondo State Government, with the goal of achieving energy independence and improving electricity supply in the state. The committee is tasked with developing strategies to enhance electricity supply, facilitate a smooth transition of authority from federal to state level, and bolster local governance and control over electricity for the benefit of Ondo State residents.
During an event at the governor’s office in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of the transition for the state’s development, stating that the move towards a more efficient and locally regulated electricity market is crucial. The objective is to meet the distinct needs of Ondo State and ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply.
The transition is expected to streamline regulatory processes, increase transparency, and lead to improvements in electricity provision and distribution in Ondo State. The committee, chaired by Tunji Ariyomo and vice-chaired by Engr. Johnson Alabi, will collaborate with stakeholders like NERC and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to ensure a seamless and effective transition.
Other committee members include Iyabo Adefemi, former Regional Head of BEDC, Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, Director of Planning at the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC), and Engr. Stephen Bolawole, State Coordinator of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB), who will serve as the Secretary. Engr. Gbenga Akeju will represent the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the committee, and a BEDC representative will also be appointed.
