Solving Election Disputes Before Swearing-In of Officials

All Election Petitions Should End Before Swearing In (via Primetweets)

Osita Chidoka, a former Aviation Minister, has suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should resolve all election disputes before elected officials are sworn into office.

Chidoka made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program where he discussed the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

These elections, which took place on November 11, 2023, in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, are still facing legal challenges regarding their outcomes.

Chidoka emphasized that INEC has not been diligent in reviewing election results within the stipulated seven days period.

He also highlighted the need for transparency in the electoral process to prevent elected officials from exploiting any loopholes, suggesting that all election results should be meticulously scrutinized.

Chidoka expressed, “All election disputes should be resolved before the swearing-in ceremony. We need to ensure that no one manipulates the election process. It is essential to thoroughly examine all paper ballots, appoint election auditors to verify the results.”

He further added, “INEC has the authority to review results within seven days, a mechanism that seems underutilized. They should compare the results from the BVAS (Biometric Voter Accreditation System) with what has been recorded and invalidate any results that are questionable.”

Chidoka also urged a return to the recommendations of the Justice Uwais report and proposed the establishment of an Election Offences Tribunal to address electoral malpractices.
