Four Minors Detained for Alleged Theft at Guzape Construction Site
The police in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested four young individuals for reportedly stealing iron rods from an unfinished building in Guzape. The minors, aged between 11 and 15, were caught following a complaint lodged at the local police station.
Community members had raised alarms about the rising suspicions surrounding the construction site, claiming the minors frequented the area at night.
Eyewitnesses recounted hearing disturbances and witnessing the children actively dismantling parts of the building.
Initial findings suggest the youths accessed the site by climbing over a fence, utilizing basic tools to extract the iron rods, which they allegedly sold to a local scrap dealer nicknamed “Babanbola.”
Authorities are in the process of locating this dealer, who is suspected of being part of a wider operation that facilitates the theft and resale of construction materials in the region. This incident raises alarms about the increasing issue of juvenile crime in the area.
Speaking to the press, police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the arrests and mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called on parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children’s late-night activities.
He stressed the need for parental guidance to deter criminal involvement. Residents are also urged to quickly report any suspicious occurrences and to support efforts that promote community safety.
Adeh advised business owners and scrap dealers to ensure the legality of their material sources and to alert authorities if they encounter stolen goods. Construction owners are encouraged to improve their site security by hiring guards and installing surveillance equipment.
The police maintain their commitment to preserving order throughout the territory. The minors will be placed in rehabilitation facilities, and those responsible will face legal repercussions.
