The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended thirteen individuals suspected of internet fraud in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
This information was shared by Mr. Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, through a statement released on October 8, 2024. The arrests took place on October 7, 2024, in the Nwaniba neighborhood, based on reliable intelligence regarding illegal online activities.
The operatives managed to confiscate a number of assets from the suspects, including two Lexus 350 cars, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla.
In the statement, Oyewale mentioned, “Operatives from the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the EFCC have taken into custody 13 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud.”
He added that these arrests were part of a covert operation triggered by trustworthy information on their fraudulent schemes.
Among the seized items were two Lexus 350 vehicles (one with the Abia registration number BGK 698 SU and another with ABC 573 BC), a Toyota Camry V6 (registered as UYY 888 HR in Akwa Ibom), and a Toyota Corolla (KTM 613 AA, also from Akwa Ibom). Additionally, six laptops and 20 smartphones were recovered during the operation.
The statement concluded by indicating that the suspects will face legal proceedings once the investigations are finalized.
