When Tom Holland stepped into Peter Parker’s shoes in the dazzling 2017 film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, fans were delighted. We’d seen the Queens-born superhero be portrayed by everyone from Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield. However, the British-born actor seemed like the absolute perfect fit for the teenage Parker, trying to find his footing in the world.
Fans were also delighted that Sony and Marvel came to an agreement so that Spider-Man would also be apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe showing up in films like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.
Despite the delight of Spider-Man and Marvel fans across the globe — Holland’s position in the MCU nearly ended in late summer 2019 when talks between Sony and Marvel broke down. Luckily, despite being a tad inebriated Holland was able to save the day.
This is why Spider-Man was nearly ousted from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
When Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced amid Phase Three of the MCU — Sony and Disney came out with a tenous agreement to share the character and its profits. However, when Disney (Marvel’s parent company) merged with Fox earlier this year, things fell apart quickly.
Sony and Disney had to come up with a new agreement about Spider-Man and unfortunately, it did not go smoothly. “Sources maintain that Marvel Studio’s President Kevin Feige exit was about money,” Deadline reported at the time. “It was about Disney seeking the 50/50 co-fi stake as the price for Marvel and Feige’s continued guiding hand that resulted in the delivery of Sony’s biggest grossing film ever. Sony declined to meet those terms.”
Disney and Sony eventually came to agreement about Spider-Man
Just when fans thought all hope was lost, on Sept. 27 — Disney and Sony announced in a joint statement that, the third Spider-Man: Homecoming film will be produced by Marvel and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. This means that Holland will remain in the MCU for at least one more film. “We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans,” Robert Lawson, Sony Pictures’ chief communications officer, said in a statement. “We are delighted to be moving forward together.”
At the time, the new agreement seemingly came out of the blue, but it looks like a drunken and crying phone call from Holland made all of this possible.
Tom Holland was drunk when he helped save Spider-Man
Though he maintained an air of cool when all of this was going down — Holland was falling apart behind the scenes like the rest of us. Apparently, Holland got the news at the absolute worse time. “We were at D23, which is the big Disney convention, and the news had come out and I was obviously devastated,” the 23-year-old explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I was really upset. All my Marvel friends were there and they were taking like Marvel pictures and I was like not allowed to be in them. It was awful.”
Still, Holland maintained his professionalism and sent Disney CEO Bob Iger a thank you email. A few days later while he was hanging at a pub with his family, he got a mysterious phone call. “I’m like 3 pints in, right? Haven’t eaten much and I get a phone call from an unknown number,” he explained. “I have a feeling. I think this is Bob Iger. But I’m drunk. I weeped. No, I didn’t weep… I did, yeah. I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.”
Thankfully, the weeping and the drunken declaration.
