At Arungwa Village, opposite Arab Contractors Construction Company along the Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway, a devastating road accident claimed the lives of eleven individuals and left eight others with various injuries.
The Abia State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the tragic incident.
According to Ngozi Ezeoma, the Abia FRSC Corps Commander, in a statement released on Wednesday night, the crash occurred at 12:45 hrs and involved a Nissan Caravan commercial bus carrying 19 passengers, which collided with a HOWO commercial truck.
A swift response was provided by a joint rescue team from FRSC RS 9.31 Aba and RS 9.32 km78 Aba Unit Commands, who arrived at the crash site within five minutes and conducted rescue operations.
At the time of the accident, ten individuals sustained injuries, while nine lost their lives on the spot. The injured victims were transported to a hospital in Aba, and the deceased were taken to the mortuary.
Following up on the crash victims in the hospital, it was reported that one male and one female adult had passed away, and one victim was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
As a result of this unfortunate event, a total of 11 individuals have lost their lives, with eight others sustaining injuries.
Initial investigations suggest that the primary cause of the crash was attributed to excessive speed, with further details on the crash’s causes to be disclosed upon completion of the investigation by FRSC Crash Investigators.”
