On Sunday, December 29, 2024, a tragic accident involving a vehicle from the convoy of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia took place, resulting in one fatality and injuries to several others.
The crash occurred in the Ihugh area of Vandeikya Local Government.
According to a source who spoke with Punch, the accident was attributed to dust from a poorly maintained road that significantly reduced visibility for the vehicles involved.
“The governor has been in his home area (Vandeikya) for nearly four days celebrating Christmas,” the source shared.
“While heading to church yesterday, his vehicle led the convoy. Due to the dust obscuring vision, one of the convoy vehicles lost control and collided with a motorcycle. Tragically, one person lost their life, and others were injured.”
Solomon Iorpev, the governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, confirmed that the accident occurred shortly after the governor left the church.
Iorpev clarified that, although the involved vehicle was from the governor’s convoy, it was not part of the convoy at the time of the incident.
“The vehicle was operating independently when the accident occurred due to the dusty conditions,” he explained.
“The dusty road and an oncoming vehicle led to evasive maneuvers, which caused it to collide with a motorcycle, leading to the unfortunate incident.”
