A tragic incident occurred in Jos, Nigeria, where a soldier from the 3rd Division at Rukuba Barracks fatally stabbed a tricycle operator named Abdullahi Muhammad.
Garba Abdullahi, the chairman of the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN), reported to the media that the 26-year-old Muhammad was attacked near the barracks’ entrance at Gebu-Bassa.
He expressed his outrage over the incident and urged the division’s leaders to deliver justice for Muhammad.
Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, a representative of the 3rd Division, confirmed the details surrounding the event.
The GAFDAN chairman stated that the stabbing took place around 7 PM when Muhammad paused to make a purchase near the barracks gate.
He explained, “After completing his purchase, Muhammad got into his tricycle, but while reversing, he accidentally stepped on the soldier’s foot. When he realized what had happened, he exited his vehicle to apologize. However, the soldier, dressed in civilian clothes, responded by slapping him, leading to a confrontation.
“During this scuffle, the soldier drew a knife and stabbed Muhammad in the chest. Despite being rushed to the military clinic, he was unfortunately pronounced dead. The soldier was initially apprehended by fellow soldiers who believed he was a civilian before discovering his true identity,” the chairman recounted.
The victim’s father, Alh. Muhammad, has called for accountability from the Nigerian army regarding his son’s death.
Further comments from Lieutenant Colonel Danja included, “This unfortunate event occurred amid an argument between Muhammad and one of our soldiers. Initial investigations suggest that the dispute escalated, leading to Mr. Abdullahi suffering knife wounds.
“Despite all attempts to save him using our medical resources, he succumbed to his injuries. Our sympathies are with his family during this painful time. In light of this incident, we have detained the soldier involved and launched an inquiry to determine the incident’s circumstances. We acknowledge the seriousness of this issue and promise the public that we prioritize transparency and accountability.
“If the investigation reveals misconduct by the soldier, he will face appropriate consequences as outlined by the military’s regulations regarding personnel behavior. The 3rd Division is committed to enforcing the law and ensuring justice prevails. We ask the community to remain composed as we conduct this investigation,” Lt. Col. Danja concluded.
