Tragic Bus and Truck Collision Claims 24 Lives in Zimbabwe
A devastating accident in Zimbabwe has led to the loss of 24 lives following a collision between a bus and a truck.
According to police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, this tragic event occurred on Thursday, February 13, 2025, close to Beitbridge, situated on the southern border with South Africa.
The bus, which was en route from Harare, the capital, to Beitbridge, carried 65 individuals at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe that the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it struck the truck head-on. The number of injured individuals is still unclear, as mentioned by Nyathi.
Photographs from state media revealed some covered bodies on the ground alongside the severely damaged bus and truck.
An official from the government’s health department in Beitbridge reported that 17 victims perished at the scene, while seven others succumbed to their injuries in a nearby hospital. Additionally, it was noted that around 30 people were hospitalized due to various injuries.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, declaring it a national disaster. He assured that the government would handle the funeral and burial costs.
“Our nation does not deserve this, especially to be confronted with such a tragic event so early in the year,” said Mnangagwa, as he urged drivers to prioritize safety while on the roads.
