A concerning video emerged showing passengers aboard the overloaded boat in Niger State shortly before it sank, resulting in fatalities.
On October 1, 2024, the boat departed from Mundi Village, transporting passengers to Gbajibo village following the local market day.
The footage, aired by Channels Television, depicts passengers in the cramped space without any safety gear like life jackets.
It is reported that the boat capsized shortly after this recording.
The vessel, made from wood, was built to hold 100 passengers but was carrying approximately 300 at the time of the incident, as per reports from an emergency official on October 2.
As of last night, a collaborative rescue mission involving the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Niger State National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and local divers has led to the recovery of 70 bodies, while 150 passengers were rescued. Efforts continue to locate those who are still missing.
