In a recent incident in Abuja, three men trapped in a blocked manhole were successfully rescued by the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), along with the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency.
The rescue took place in the Guzape area of Asokoro District, as confirmed by Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the acting Director-General of FEMD, in a statement on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
Mr. Mohammed noted that two of the men were workers attempting to remove debris that was obstructing the manhole linked to the central sewage system. An explosion caused by accumulated methane gas led to their suffocation.
The third individual was a volunteer who found himself trapped while trying to assist the workers.
Currently, one of the rescued men is being treated at Wuse General Hospital, while the other two are at Asokoro District Hospital.
The FEMD chief urged the community to leave the upkeep of public facilities to official government entities and praised the emergency responders for preventing a potential disaster.
