Unyielding Progress: Our Commitment to Removing Shantytowns Remains Unwavering

Demolition of Shanties in Abuja to Continue Despite Protests

Nyesom Wike, the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reaffirmed that the ongoing demolition of unlawful structures in Abuja will persist.

During a recent visit to the Ruga community near Wuye, he emphasized that protests would not hinder the government’s plans.

As reported by Channels Television, Wike mentioned that his administration aims to engage with the residents of these shanties to identify lasting solutions for the illegal settlements. He highlighted the need for strategies that would curtail the re-emergence of such communities in the future.

In light of a protest on November 8, where demonstrators accused the FCT Administration of land theft, Wike dismissed these claims, suggesting that the protest reflected a “misplaced priority.”

“Our commitment to preserving the city’s master plan is unwavering,” he stated, insisting that public dissent would not alter the administration’s approach to the demolitions, which are intended to enhance safety and order in the capital.
