The Masked Singer has become one of the most successful underdogs in show business. One of the most compelling performers on the was called the Butterfly. Fans have been guessing her true identity. Here’s who the Butterfly truly is, and what she said about her time on The Masked Singer.
The mystery of the Butterfly from ‘The Masked Singer’
The Masked Singer may have garnered mixed reviews, but it has a unique format. An adaptation of the Korean reality series King of Mask Singer, the show features a bevy of celebrities performing hit songs. They wear bizarre outfits that cover their whole bodies, concealing their identities from the judges.
When performing on the show, the celebrities go by vague names referencing their costumes such as the Monster, the Unicorn, and the Butterfly. The Butterfly in particular has been a source of mystery and intrigue for fans. The Butterfly won over audiences with her unique singing voice.
Her true identity
Who is she? Thanks to her distinct vocals, some fans were able to determine her identity. The Butterfly was in fact Michelle Williams, one of the former members of Destiny’s Child.
After Destiny’s Child broke up, Williams decided to pursue a career in gospel music. She has also acted in numerous Broadway shows, including Aida , Chicago, and The Color Purple. Because most fans of Destiny’s Child are fans of R&B and pop, they didn’t follow Williams’ subsequent career as much as they followed the careers of Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland. However, many fans of the former girl group were still able to recognize her powerful voice.
What Michelle Williams regrets – and what she doesn’t
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Williams blames herself for being too recognizable. “Apparently my high register gives it away. That’s what I was told.” She added “I look back, the judges could no longer act like they didn’t know who I was. I’ll tell you this, when I was backstage, I heard a playback of myself and I scared myself cause I was like, that’s Michelle, dummy! I did that to myself.
Williams also regretted choosing to perform songs on the show which resembled her trademark gospel music, like Ariana Grande’s hit “Bang Bang.” “I probably should have chosen songs total opposite of anything I’m known for, which is gospel. I should have done some rappin’ or something.”
Although she left the show, Williams enjoyed her experience. She told People “It was a beautiful experience. Yes I’ve been on big stages, but for me personally, this was something for me to know like, ‘No, you got this!’ What a confidence builder.”
Williams has an enviable career. During both her time with Destiny’s Child and her time as solo performer, she has given the world many wonderful songs. Even with her storied career as a recording artist, she was very proud of her work on The Masked Singer, saying “It was one of the best things I’ve ever done in entertainment, though.”
