The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to investigate several individuals who served as aides to Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State from 2016 to 2024.

This investigation comes as Bello’s court appearance is scheduled for October 24.

The aim is to strengthen the commission’s case against him amid allegations of corrupt practices and mishandling of public finances during his time in office.

Reports indicate that the inquiry could lead to the arrest of past aides, some of whom currently hold roles within the new administration. Their involvement is believed to play a role in the financial irregularities linked to Bello’s governance.

Attempts to get a comment from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale about their investigative approach have not succeeded. However, insiders report that the agency possesses extensive evidence against Bello, exceeding what has been submitted in the ongoing court case in Abuja.

The commission is eager to progress with the legal proceedings against Bello, who has managed to avoid arrest for several months.

Sources indicated that the EFCC has been deliberate in its actions so far because they have yet to formally bring Bello to trial.

One EFCC official stated, “We hold more evidence against Bello than many realize. He’s aware that we have documentation concerning his alleged financial misconduct during his governorship.”

The official further noted that Bello’s reliance on the immunity of his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, as a shield against arrest would only prolong the outcome.

“He will eventually be held accountable; the law applies to everyone,” the official affirmed.

A senior EFCC member, remaining anonymous due to the nature of the case, suggested that new allegations could emerge against Bello.

She emphasized that significant developments might unfold during the trial, stating, “Many of his backers, including Civil Society Organizations and lawmakers who have opposed our chairman, may need to reconsider their position once all facts are revealed.”

Bello is anticipated to face a public summons along with a new 16-count indictment on October 24, alongside two co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu.
