Written by David S. Goyer (Terminator: Dark Fate) on a story crafted by him and Christopher Nolan (Tenet), Man of Steel told the origin story of Kal-El as he was sent to Earth by his parents to escape his homeworld, Krypton’s, destruction. He is raised by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent as their son Clark in Smallville, Kansas, growing up and learning of his super powers and being taught to keep them hidden from the world over concerns of humanity’s fears of the unknown. Clark eventually comes back to his home to defend the planet from the ruthless Kryptonian General Zod and his rebellion members, donning a suit with his family crest and becoming the hero known as Superman.

The film starred Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible — Fallout) in the titular role, with Kevin Costner (Yellowstone) and Diane Lane (Tully) starring as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) as iconic love interest Lois Lane, Russell Crowe (Unhinged) as Clark’s biological father Jor-El and Michael Shannon (Knives Out) as General Zod.

Man of Steel was a box office hit, grossing over $668 million at the global box office on an estimated budget of $225-258 million, though received mixed reviews for its pacing, darker tone and lack of character development. Nonetheless, its success helped spawn the DCEU, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, in which Cavill reprised his role as Superman, as well as Suicide Squad, Shazam!, Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey and Aquaman. Talks of a sequel to Man of Steel have been in the works since its 2013 release and despite the production troubles on 2017’s Justice League and reported parting from the franchise in 2018, Cavill said in November he hasn’t given up on reprising the role just yet.
