Zander Murray, Scotland’s first openly gay footballer, has expressed his shock and dismay at the “horrendous” homophobic abuse he received on social media just prior to the release of his upcoming documentary. The Bonnyrigg Rose player, who is partnering with the BBC to explore ways to tackle homophobia in football, shared a post applauding a young football fan and was met with a derogatory message.
Murray, who came out as gay in September 2022, has been vocal about his desire to serve as a role-model for the LGBT+ community. His bravery has inspired other players such as Blackpool striker Jake Daniels, who became the first openly gay UK footballer since Justin Fashanu earlier in the season.
