Arne Slot assumed the role of head coach for Liverpool in June of the previous year and successfully guided the team to clinch the Premier League title this season.
The Reds were named Premier League champions in April, amassing a total of 82 points with four games left to play. Although their league performance was remarkable, characterized by 25 victories and just four defeats out of 37 matches, their other campaigns did not yield the same success.
A significant disappointment for Liverpool this season was their ousting from the Round of 16 in the Champions League. The team started strong, winning seven of their first eight matches.
In the Round of 16, Liverpool faced PSG. Despite securing a 1-0 win in the first leg, they ultimately fell short, losing 4-1 in the penalty shootout in the second leg.
Slot commented on his team’s departure from the Champions League, expressing that they were “quite unfortunate” with the matchup they were given in that phase of the tournament.
What were Arne Slot’s remarks on Liverpool’s UCL exit?
Slot discussed Liverpool’s Champions League experience this season, noting (remarks via BBC Sport) that their jam-packed schedule, coupled with challenging opponents, proved problematic.
“We were quite unlucky to face PSG in March because we lack a winter break here. We had to compete continuously from November to March, facing all those difficult matches against Real Madrid and City,” he explained.
“At the tail end of that stretch, we were up against a squad that can match our intensity, but they had a winter break while we were nearing the end of a grueling four-month timeline. I believe if we could have taken them on in April, it would have been a different story.”
“It was unfortunate since we were at the top of the league — we might have drawn Benfica, like Barcelona did — and afterwards faced Benfica and Dortmund, but instead, we got PSG,” Slot concluded.
Liverpool is poised to conclude their season with a final Premier League match against Crystal Palace on May 25, at Anfield.
