Declan Rice, a player for Arsenal, is set to be part of Lee Carsley’s lineup for England’s match against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.
Rice has been included in Carsley’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games, with England facing Finland at Wembley Stadium on September 10.
This match marks a new beginning for both teams, as Carsley takes over as Gareth Southgate’s interim replacement until the end of 2024, and Heimir Halgrimsson leads the Republic of Ireland.
For Rice, this game holds special significance due to his controversial switch of international allegiance from Ireland to England in 2019.
Back then, Rice’s decision sparked outrage among some Irish fans, following his earlier statement that he was not interested in playing for England. He has since earned 58 caps for the English national team.
Although Rice was on the bench when England defeated Ireland 3-0 in a closed-door friendly at Wembley during the pandemic, this upcoming match in Dublin will be his first return since 2019.
England ended a long winless streak against Ireland with that victory, dating back to 1985, and have not beaten them in a competitive game since 1980.
Despite the potential for a hostile reception from Irish fans, Carsley is backing Rice as a starter in a mostly unchanged lineup as he vies for the permanent managerial position.
