Haaland Makes History: Equaling an 87-Year-Old Record on His Norway Captaincy Debut

Erling Haaland is well-known for breaking scoring records, and the Manchester City forward is on the brink of surpassing an 87-year-old milestone very soon.

As the captain of Norway, Haaland will lead his team in two UEFA Nations League matches: at home against Slovenia on October 10 and away at Austria three days later.

Due to Martin Odegaard’s injury, Haaland will don the captain’s armband for the first time in his career.

This season, the 24-year-old has already netted 11 goals for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions before the international break.

Haaland aims to continue this impressive form with Norway, having scored five goals in international play since the year began, bringing his total to 32 in 35 appearances before these matches.

He added to his tally in Thursday’s match against Slovenia, scoring just seven minutes into the game, marking his 33rd international goal. His remarkable goal-scoring ability has propelled him up the ranks of Norway’s all-time scorers, now tied with record-holder Jorgen Juve.

The 33-goal benchmark set by Juve has stood since 1937, with notable players like John Carew and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a former Manchester United striker and current manager, unable to match it.

Haaland has the opportunity to break this long-standing record within a week, and it appears likely he will do so before 2024 concludes.
