Maddison Claps Back at Roy Keane After Spurs Win Europa League

James Maddison hits back at Roy Keane with hilarious response as Tottenham lift Europa League trophy image

Tottenham has finally claimed a trophy after 17 years, with Ange Postecoglou leading them to a UEFA Europa League title following a 1-0 victory against Manchester United in Bilbao.

The decisive moment came from Brennan Johnson, whose goal marked a night of jubilation for the traveling Spurs supporters at the Estadio San Mames.

The excitement extended beyond the trophy presentation, as midfielder James Maddison shared a memorable moment during his post-match interview.

Though Maddison was sidelined due to an injury and didn’t play in the final, he joined his teammates on the field afterward and was interviewed by CBS analyst Peter Schmeichel.

In a lively exchange, Maddison praised Spurs’ determination while playfully addressing former United captain Roy Keane, known for his sharp critiques, who was back in the CBS studio.

Keane has made headlines for mocking Maddison’s iconic darts-themed goal celebration and questioned his on-field contributions at the beginning of 2025.

“Maddison is alright when he isn’t at the darts. But if you think he’s going to propel Spurs into the top six, you’re dreaming. He’s a decent player, sure. But if Maddison returns to the squad, other players aren’t going to think, ‘Oh great, we’re fine now,’” Keane remarked on The Overlap podcast.

How did James Maddison respond to Roy Keane after the UEL win?

During his CBS interview, Maddison mentioned that he decided to participate because of Keane’s presence, and co-panelist Micah Richards encouraged him to showcase his darts celebration specifically for Keane.

“I wasn’t planning on doing interviews, but hearing Roy Keane was in the studio changed my mind,” Maddison said.

“Absolutely, Micah, I’ll do it for you! Roy Keane, this one’s for you, mate,” he added.

Keane responded by acknowledging Maddison’s performance in the final, noting that even while injured, he was still in full kit to receive his medal.

“I’ve always maintained he’s a good player, but he must be more reliable. He did quite well tonight,” Keane remarked.

Reflecting on the victory, Maddison emphasized that triumphing in the Europa League has made the season worthwhile for Tottenham and their dedicated fans.

“What an unforgettable experience. Winning makes everything worthwhile – the struggles of not being on the field hurt. This is a fantastic achievement, paving the way for Champions League qualification, but it’s really about delivering joy to the fans who have endured so much over the years,” Maddison elaborated.

Maddison is expected to miss Tottenham’s last Premier League match of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion on May 25.
