Nico Williams finds himself at the center of one of the most significant transfer situations this summer.
As reported by TEAMTALK, the 22-year-old, who plays for Athletic Club, has already settled on personal terms with Barcelona for a contract extending until 2031, reportedly worth €12m [$14m] annually. However, the transition remains unresolved.
Barcelona is willing to activate Williams’ €58m [$68m] release clause but insists on paying in installments. Athletic Club has firmly rejected this strategy, stating the clause must be paid fully and upfront as per their agreement.
Meanwhile, Athletic Club is attempting to retain their key player by presenting him with an enhanced contract through 2027. Nonetheless, Williams has expressed his desire to move to Barcelona.
This standstill is escalating tension and beginning to affect the situation.
Nico Williams’ former coach criticizes Barcelona over transfer issues
“Naturally, I would love to have him at Villarreal, but financial constraints make that unlikely.”
“He’s at a prestigious club and wants to advance his career, likely seeing Barcelona as the next step.”
Marcelino voiced his worries for Williams, stating:
“The situation is difficult and could have been avoided. Simplifying the process would be better if they genuinely want to sign him and have the funds available. It’s unfortunate for Nico, who I care for deeply.”
He also took issue with Barcelona’s management, asserting:
“While talking is essential, announcing an agreement necessitates being prepared for the subsequent actions.”
“True professionalism involves finalizing matters promptly, minimizing uncertainty and complaints in the process.”
This week, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco confirmed that Williams desires to come and the club is committed to making the deal a reality.
Bayern Munich is keeping a close watch on developments, while Arsenal has reportedly withdrawn due to salary expectations.
