After a disappointing 3-2 defeat at Brighton, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his anger at the team’s performance, especially after they had a strong start with a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Postecoglou delivered a scathing review of his players’ actions that let a potential victory slip away at the AMEX Stadium.
Welsh forward Brennan Johnson initiated the scoring in an exciting first half, marking his sixth consecutive game with a goal for Spurs.
Just before halftime, James Maddison extended Tottenham’s lead, exploiting Brighton’s vulnerable high defensive line.
What seemed to be an easy second half for Tottenham turned into a surprise as a revitalized Brighton scored three goals within just 18 minutes, turning the game around completely.
This defeat halted Tottenham’s five-match winning streak in all competitions, which included a notable 3-0 victory at Manchester United the previous weekend. However, Postecoglou wasn’t willing to make excuses after the intense match.
“It’s disappointing. I’m frustrated and absolutely gutted with that. It’s probably the worst defeat since I’ve been here,” he stated.

“An unacceptable second half. We weren’t close to our standards. We let our guard down.”
“We fell into a false sense of security, which is hard to grasp, considering we’ve typically avoided this under my leadership. We paid dearly for it.”
“The issue was that we were moving forward too smoothly. If you get too confident in football and life, you risk being caught off guard. This was a dreadful loss. The only way to amend this is through my guidance.”
Postecoglou mentioned he will take time to review the team’s situation during the upcoming international break and will talk with his players when they regroup in over a week.
Tottenham’s next matches will be on October 19 in an EPL showdown against West Ham United, followed by a UEFA Europa League game against AZ Alkmaar five days later.
