The fixture for the 2024 UEFA Super Cup sees Real Madrid taking on Atalanta at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland on August 14.
Real Madrid is on par with AC Milan and Barcelona with five UEFA Super Cup victories and has the opportunity to make history by securing a record sixth in the upcoming encounter.
Atalanta’s presence in the match holds significance as they make their inaugural appearance in the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final with a hat-trick from Ademola Lookman. Despite being underdogs, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Italian side should not be underestimated.
UEFA Super Cup Structure
The UEFA Super Cup, initially known as the European Super Cup, commenced in 1973 and is an annual competition that determines the top team in Europe while serving as the opening event for the European club season.
Although the format has evolved since its inception, following the renaming in 1995, the competition’s structure has remained intact. The single-leg final features the previous season’s Champions League victor against the reigning Europa League champion. Previously, it involved the champions of the European Cup and the UEFA Cup.
Until 1998, the final was contested over two legs, but more recently, it is a one-off match held at a neutral venue.
Past UEFA Super Cup Winners
Despite being considered an ‘extra game’ on the club calendar, winning the UEFA Super Cup remains prestigious, with Champions League winners dominating by claiming victory in 10 of the last 11 finals.
*Finals from 1973 to 1999 are based on an aggregate final score over two legs.
