Borno state has reported 451 cholera cases following significant flooding from the Alau Dam’s collapse.

The flooding has impacted Maiduguri and surrounding areas, causing around 2 million individuals to be displaced, destroying health facilities, and disrupting access to clean water and electricity, alongside loss of lives and property.

During an emergency meeting at the EOC Center in Maiduguri on October 4, 2024, Professor Baba Malam Gana, the Borno State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, confirmed the outbreak.

“We are experiencing a cholera outbreak in Borno State, which spreads easily through the fecal-oral route, typically taking 2-5 days to incubate,” Gana explained.

The commissioner linked the outbreak to the recent floods, which have displaced many people and damaged essential health infrastructure.

“Factors contributing to this situation include inadequate sanitation and personal hygiene, open defecation, poor food storage, insufficient clean water access, and high population density in displaced persons’ camps,”
he added.

The local government areas impacted include Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Konduga, Mafa, and Monguno.

“I urge all ministries, agencies, and partners to collaborate effectively to manage the ongoing cholera situation,” Prof. Gana stated.

He also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, expressing gratitude for the support to flood-affected communities, advancements in health infrastructure, job creation, and the allocation of 15% of the 2024 budget to the health sector.

“The media plays a crucial role in partnering with the government to educate and raise public awareness about cholera risks and prevention strategies,” Gana concluded.
