Miley Cyrus disclosed that she went through a “traumatic” and “deeply distressing” health incident while co-hosting her New Year’s Eve special, “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party,” with her godmother Dolly Parton to celebrate the arrival of 2023. In a recent appearance on The Zane Lowe Show, she revealed that she experienced a ruptured ovarian cyst in the midst of the show’s production.
“I faced a medical crisis,” Cyrus admitted. “It was incredibly traumatic because it was very painful, yet I still performed. However, it was exceptionally challenging for me.”
In spite of the physical distress and medical ambiguity, the 32-year-old “Flowers” artist continued with the live show, demonstrating her dedication and commitment to her fans. She explained that at that moment, they were uncertain about the situation, but she chose to proceed with the broadcast, which she co-produced with Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live.
As stated by Johns Hopkins University, ovarian cysts can emerge for various reasons and while most are non-cancerous, some may lead to significant symptoms like severe abdominal discomfort and bleeding, necessitating prompt medical care.
Miley contemplated stepping away from music
The incident was so alarming that it led Miley to seriously think about leaving the music industry. In the same interview, she recounted a significant conversation she had with Michaels “I had dinner with Lorne, and he told me something that resonated,” she shared. “He said, ‘You have six months. Everyone gets six months to feel down, and then we begin to rebuild’“.
Michaels’ insight served as a pivotal moment. “He mentioned that ‘You wouldn’t believe how many artists have sat in this very chair and expressed a desire to quit music. Everyone faces similar challenges, everyone endures these traumatic experiences’“.
Despite the struggles, Cyrus managed to recover and announced her upcoming album titled “Something Beautiful,” set to release this month. This project signifies a fresh chapter in her journey after enduring a period filled with considerable physical and emotional hardships.
Insights into Miley’s unique vocal situation
In the same discussion with Lowe, she also touched upon another health challenge that has affected her career: Reinke’s edema, a vocal cord condition. “I have a substantial polyp on my vocal cord, which has greatly influenced my vocal tone and texture,” she detailed. However, she also admitted that performing with this issue is extraordinarily tough, likening it to “running a marathon with weights on your ankles“.
