The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has praised the Federal Government for stopping the MKO Abiola International Airport project.
Earlier reports noted that during its two-year anniversary, the Ademola Adeleke administration announced its plan to relocate the airport from Ido-Osun to Aisu in Ede South.
On Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development revealed it is pausing the airport project in Ede due to lingering issues yet to be resolved.
The Osun APC, through spokesperson Kola Olabisi, expressed that Governor Adeleke’s attempt to move the airport to his hometown has sparked several conflicts in Ido-Osun, the original site.
The party criticized the relocation plans as a mishandling of governance and an oppressive move.
Reports indicated that Ido-Osun citizens have been actively protesting against the government’s choice.
The statement read, “The unpopular attempt by the governor to shift the airport to his area has drawn criticism from many, as there are no substantial reasons for this decision other than a biased intent to show favoritism.
“The airport relocation controversy has escalated tensions in the state, highlighting the necessity for government intervention to ease the unrest surrounding the airport’s construction or move during this financially sensitive time for the state, which struggles with generating internal revenue.
“This failed airport relocation plan reveals a lack of strategic planning from Governor Adeleke’s administration, which appears to be driven by whims rather than careful governance, causing significant disruption since the PDP took power 26 months ago.”
The APC also commended the Federal Government’s swift action, emphasizing it could help prevent further financial mismanagement accusations against Governor Adeleke.
