One Direction came together once again, but tragically, it was for the funeral of Liam Payne. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik attended the ceremony for their late bandmate who died at just 31 after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last October. The service took place in a church located in the English countryside, where the remaining members, dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, remembered Payne. This gathering marked their first public appearance together since their split nearly nine years ago.
As reported by Page Six, Styles arrived first, followed by Tomlinson, then Horan and Malik. Despite the pleasant weather, the atmosphere was somber. Though they did not congregate as a group, Tomlinson and Malik were seen talking outside before the service. Other attendees included Payne’s ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole, mother of his son Bear Gray, and his girlfriend at the time of his passing, Kate Cassidy. Horan’s girlfriend, Amelia Wooley, was also present, sharing a moment with him, while the other members attended solo but were surrounded by family and close friends of Payne.

A horse-drawn carriage was used to bring Payne’s casket to the church, and afterward, the mourners began to leave. Even as the members parted ways, Styles and Horan connected briefly to share a few words. Although their interactions were limited at the funeral, the band released an emotional statement on Instagram, expressing their devastation over Liam’s death and promising to cherish the memories shared. “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. … The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. … We love you Liam.”
One Direction, known for their immense popularity, sold 70 million records and holds the record for the most Teen Choice Award nominations. However, their path was filled with obstacles. Tomlinson faced legal trouble when he was arrested for an altercation with paparazzi, while Malik dealt with tumultuous relationships that brought him negative publicity. Styles has also been linked to high-profile relationship rumors, while Horan has experienced his own share of ups and downs, including a challenging breakup with actress Hailee Steinfeld.
Simon Cowell also paid tribute
Simon Cowell attended the service with his fiancée, Lauren Silverman. Cowell played a pivotal role in the rise of One Direction, having signed them after they finished third on “The X Factor” in 2010, where he was a judge. He appeared deeply affected by the loss, as he was instrumental in turning the band into global sensations, helping them achieve unprecedented fame and success.
However, Payne’s untimely passing cast a long shadow over the event. Recent reports from his autopsy revealed that he had multiple substances in his system during his fall, including a mixture known as “pink cocaine.” This heartbreakingly suggests that Payne may not have maintained his sobriety, despite having claimed to be clean as recently as earlier this year.
