The Untold Struggles of Hallmark Star Holly Robinson Peete

Holly Robinson Peete has experienced both privilege and hardship in her life. Growing up as the daughter of “Sesame Street” actor Matt Robinson and agent Dolores Robinson, she has fond memories of her childhood, filled with neighborhood gatherings and pets. However, her adult years brought significant challenges.

In her formative years, Holly witnessed her father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he endured for 20 years before passing away at 65. Soon after, her brother was also diagnosed with the same illness. Despite these difficulties, she drew strength from her brother’s resolve, transforming her sorrow into advocacy. Sadly, the family’s troubles with neurological disorders did not end there.

Additionally, Holly’s oldest son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in his early years, a situation that brought turmoil and tested her marriage to former NFL player Rodney Peete. However, the family united, learning more about autism and stepping into advocacy for the cause. During this time, Holly also faced workplace racism, yet she has consistently leveraged her platform to advocate for key issues.

Holly Robinson Peete lost her father in 2002 after a 20-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Tragically, her brother, Matt Robinson III, was later diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s as well, at the age of 45, echoing their father’s battle with the condition.

The emotional toll on the family has been profound, as they witnessed both their father and brother’s struggles. Holly expressed her feelings on social media, venting her frustration towards Parkinson’s while also drawing inspiration from her brother’s determination to lead a fulfilling life despite the challenges. He manages his condition through medication and staying active, emphasizing the importance of not letting the disease dictate his life.

In 1997, Holly and Rodney established the HollyRod Foundation, aiming to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by Parkinson’s disease.

When Holly welcomed twins in October 1997, she had no foresight into the challenges ahead. She quickly noticed that her son, RJ, behaved differently than his twin sister, Ryan, preferring solitary play and demonstrating unusual interests. Despite suspecting something was amiss, she was unprepared for his autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, which initially brought a wave of sadness.

Over time, however, Holly learned to embrace RJ for who he is. With proper support and therapy, RJ surpassed expectations and found success, securing a position with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, a development Holly cherishes deeply.

She expressed gratitude for the inclusive hiring practices that allowed her son, who has autism, to thrive in his career for eight years now.
