Taika Waititi has explained why the Apple TV+ adaptation of Time Bandits was canceled. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he mentioned that the cancellation was primarily due to high production expenses, reflecting the growing pressure on streaming services to manage their costs effectively.
Set to premiere in July 2024, Time Bandits centered on 11-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) and his adventures with a crew of time-traveling thieves. The series featured notable actors like Lisa Kudrow as Penelope and Waititi himself as the Supreme Being. While critics rated it reasonably well at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show did not capture the audience’s interest, receiving just a 50% audience score. This lack of connection, coupled with its hefty budget, resulted in its cancellation after a single season.
During the discussion, Waititi reminisced about the show’s short-lived experience, saying, “This was a fantastic show for one season. The reason for not continuing? It was too costly.” He also expressed his fondness for filming in New Zealand, joking, “If you ever want to visit New Zealand, please don’t. But if you do, it’s a wonderful place. That’s my favorite part of filming Time Bandits — being home with my fellow Kiwis.”
The show’s cancellation reflects a wider trend in streaming, where platforms prefer projects that ensure viewer engagement. Similar shows, like Our Flag Means Death and KAOS, also faced early terminations primarily due to budget issues. Despite critical acclaim, Time Bandits struggled to gain a substantial audience, underscoring the challenges faced by ambitious, high-budget series.

Nonetheless, Waititi is not slowing down, with multiple upcoming projects, including an adaptation of Klara and the Sun.
