The Viettel Marathon 2024 reached its finale on December 22, taking place at the renowned Angkor Wat, with over 9,000 participants running on a course verified by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA).
This event attracted top athletes from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, including Nguyen Thi Oanh, Hong Le, Nguyen Van Lai, Trung Cuong, Pheara Vann, Terence Lai, and Lodkeo Inthakoumman. Vietnamese runners particularly excelled, leading the way in all categories.
In the men’s 42 km marathon, Nguyen Van Lai, aged 38, achieved victory with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 54 seconds, finishing over 10 minutes ahead of his closest competitor, Cambodian runner Pheara Vann.
Hong Le secured the gold medal in the women’s marathon by completing the race in 2 hours, 49 minutes, and 14 seconds, squeezing past Bui Thi Thu Ha, who finished just one minute later in second place.
Nguyen Thi Oanh, recognized as the “golden girl” of Vietnamese athletics, participated in the 21 km half marathon after breaking a national record earlier in the year in Hanoi. She excelled at Angkor Wat, winning with a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, and 15 seconds, outpacing Cambodia’s Kan Sreyroth by over six minutes.
The Viettel Marathon 2024, which spanned Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, concluded successfully.
With a total of over 25,000 runners across all stages and a combined prize pool of $150,000, the marathon not only highlighted exceptional athletic talent but also promoted cultural exchange and reinforced the camaraderie among these three Indochina countries.
