The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 35 individuals suspected of cybercrime activities in Auchi, Edo State.
These arrests were made across several localities in the town, particularly on Vigilante Street, near Sabo Ibenafo Road, and the Back of Yak.
A statement released on EFCC’s verified Twitter account on Tuesday indicated that the operation was based on “credible intelligence linking the suspects to online fraud.”
The agency reiterated its determination to fight against cybercrime, asserting, “We are committed to eliminating economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.”
During the arrests, the EFCC seized various items, including nine vehicles, eleven laptops, 46 mobile phones, and two smartwatches. These gadgets are suspected to have been utilized for the alleged fraudulent acts.
The arrested individuals are now in custody and undergoing investigations. The EFCC has stated that they will face charges in court once the investigation is complete.
This operation represents a significant step in the EFCC’s continuous battle against the growing issue of internet fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo,” in Nigeria.
Auchi, being a central town in Edo State, has been recognized as a focal point for these illegal activities, leading to enhanced monitoring and enforcement efforts by the agency.
The EFCC encourages the public to report any suspicious activities and provide credible information to assist in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
