An incident occurred at Omata Junction on the Nnewi-Oba Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State where gunmen launched an attack on a police checkpoint.
At approximately 9:20 am on Friday, the assailants targeted the police operatives at the checkpoint by throwing explosive devices during their invasion.
Reports indicate that one policeman lost his life in the attack, while another officer sustained injuries.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, verified the occurrence in a statement released on Friday.
Ikenga confirmed that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has initiated a thorough search for the perpetrators.
In his statement, Ikenga stated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has instructed intensive manhunt operations for the gunmen who assaulted the police team at the Omata junction on the Nnewi Oba road at 9:20 am today, 9/8/2024.”
He further added, “The police force, under the command of the Assistant Commissioner of the Nnewi Area Command, is collaborating with the local community to identify and capture the attackers.
“Following a shootout with the police operatives, one officer was fatally wounded by an explosive hurled by the gunmen, and the other officer, who is critically injured, is currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.
“Subsequently, law enforcement has taken control of the area, and more details will be provided in due course.”
