Protest Chaos Erupts in Kenya Parliament
Violence broke out in Kenya on Tuesday, June 25, as protestors breached parliament barricades in Nairobi. The protesters, angered by proposed tax hikes, stormed the complex where lawmakers were discussing the controversial bill.
The demonstrators urged legislators to reject the bill, which aimed to introduce new taxes in a country already grappling with a high cost of living. The situation escalated as hundreds of protesters clashed with police outside parliament, resulting in numerous injuries, as reported by Amnesty International Kenya.
Following the bill’s passage by lawmakers, the protestors forced their way into parliament. Lawmakers hurriedly made their escape through a tunnel, while protesters permitted opposition legislators opposing the bill to leave the building unharmed.
During the chaos, government properties were vandalized, and a section of the parliament building was set ablaze.
