On May 30, Simon Ekpa, a leader advocating for Nigerian separation, faced proceedings at the Päijät-Häme District Court as his trial on terrorism allegations commenced.
Recall that he was taken into custody in November 2024 on suspicions of various terror-related offenses, including promoting violence and funding terrorist endeavors.
Allegations against him include using social media to foster violence and instability in Nigeria’s Southeast during his campaign for Biafra’s independence.
Prosecutors, who are seeking a six-year prison sentence for Ekpa, claim his actions may be classified as terrorism under Finnish laws.
“We possess substantial evidence concerning his online conduct and communication,” stated state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala.
During questioning, Ekpa refuted claims of orchestrating arms shipments for pro-Biafran entities, among other accusations.
This dual Finnish-Nigerian national is associated with a branch of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for the autonomy of Nigeria’s southeastern region, which saw a devastating civil conflict from 1967 to 1970.
Additionally, Ekpa has been involved as a local representative for Finland’s conservative National Coalition Party in Lahti, where he participated in the city’s public transport committee.
