Authorities in Ogun State have detained five individuals suspected of murdering a fisherman named Segun Sikiru in the Iwopin area of Ijebu-Ode.
Reports indicate that the suspects allegedly attacked Sikiru with a bamboo stick and later disposed of his body in a local lagoon.
The suspects, who are residents of the area—Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa—were apprehended by the Abigi Police Division on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Police spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola confirmed the arrests followed a report from the victim’s family.
On the day of the incident, Sikiru, along with his two sons, went fishing when they detected unusual actions at their fish trap, known locally as Iki.
As they approached to inspect the trap, they saw the suspects attempting to steal from it.
Upon being noticed by Sikiru and his sons, the suspects allegedly assaulted Sikiru, striking him in the chest with a bamboo stick, while his sons managed to escape the scene.
“When he saw the suspects, he tried to alert others to the theft occurring at his trap. However, the assailants attacked him, and once they realized he had become unconscious, they reportedly disposed of him in the lagoon.”
“His body has been located and sent to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode. The five suspects are now in custody, and further investigations are ongoing.”
