NLC Upholds December 1 Deadline for Minimum Wage Implementation
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed that the December 1 deadline for all states to implement the revised minimum wage is still in force.
On July 29, 2024, President Bola Tinubu enacted the minimum wage law, which raised the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
Furthermore, on November 11, the NLC set November 30 as the final date for state governments to adopt the new minimum wage for workers.
The union has urged its members to begin an indefinite strike in any state that fails to implement the new wage after the deadline.
Despite this, numerous states have successfully adopted the new wage policy, with over 30 governors committing to establish a minimum monthly salary of at least N70,000 for their workers.
However, states such as Zamfara, Sokoto, Cross River, and Nasarawa have not yet come to an agreement regarding improved salaries for their employees.
NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, reiterated the seriousness of the deadline, stating that the union’s stance remains unchanged despite the compliance of many states.
“Just because most have complied does not mean all have; every state must follow the union’s instructions or we will act on our warnings,” he remarked.
