Tragic Attack Leaves Thirteen Dead in Benue State
In a recent attack in Azege settlement, located in the Tombo Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, thirteen individuals lost their lives. The incident is believed to have been carried out by individuals suspected to be herdsmen.
The assault occurred on Sunday morning at approximately 7 a.m., causing significant destruction, including the loss of life, arson, and harm to agriculture.
Azege is notably the hometown of Hon. Benjamin Uzenda, who previously served as the Caretaker Chairman of the Logo Local Government. He confirmed the attack to The Nation, mentioning that there had been earlier attempts on the settlement by herdsmen in the past two months.
Hon. Uzenda described the situation, stating, “The attackers were equipped with advanced weapons and opened fire on unsuspecting residents who were preparing for morning church services.
“It appears to be a coordinated assault, as they targeted defenseless villagers, shooting indiscriminately and attacking women and children.”
“The attackers moved through homes and fled the scene before security forces arrived,” he added.
As news of the attack spread, many residents fled the area, fearing further violence. Azege settlement is situated about a 30-minute drive from Ayilamo, which has also experienced multiple attacks and ongoing violence.
Reportedly, some wounded victims were brought to the Ayilamo Primary Health Care center for medical attention.
The Chairman of the Council, Hon. Clement, was reported to have planned a visit to the site of the tragedy.
