Authorities from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have reported the capture of four individuals in Akwa Ibom on charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal mining, and transportation of iron ore.

Two suspects were nabbed for vandalizing power transmission lines in Ikot Akpan Okop village in the Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, while the other two were apprehended for involvement in illegal mining.

NSCDC’s state commandant, Mr Eluyemi Eluwade, disclosed the details of the arrests during a briefing at the Command’s exhibit yard on Wednesday. The mining suspects were caught transporting 1,200 bags of solid minerals on Aug. 26 in a truck with Registration No: TYN 157 XA.

The minerals were extracted from the Ibeno beach area and were en route to Port Harcourt. Eluwade mentioned that the operation was based on intelligence received regarding the illicit mining activity.

Following the arrest of the two suspects involved in illegal mining, Eluwade emphasized the Corps’ zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities. He condemned the vandalism of public utilities like power cables, telecommunication infrastructure, and street lights in the region.

Eluwade stressed the detriments of illegal mining, labeling it as an act of economic sabotage that deprives the government of essential revenue required for developmental projects. He assured the public that all suspects would face legal proceedings once investigations are finalized.
