Fire Devastates Moniya Market in Oyo State
A fire occurred on Monday at Moniya market located in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, causing extensive damage valued in millions of naira.
The fire reportedly started around 12:30 am, likely due to an electrical surge.
During a visit by The PUNCH, it was revealed that the flames resulted in severe losses, destroying numerous goods and cash.
Kolawole Balogun, the Babaloja of Moniya Garage, along with Garage Chairman Saliu Bello, stated they were informed about the incident by a security guard around the early morning hours.
Both leaders expressed their dismay regarding the widespread losses.
According to Balogun, “I quickly rushed to the market upon receiving the news. We have lost goods worth millions. Fortunately, the fire service arrived swiftly, which helped reduce the damage.”
He added that significant amounts of cash, which traders generally keep in their shops overnight, were also lost.
Numerous affected individuals, including Yetunde Musa, Ajetunmobi Idowu, Olaide Badmus, Balogun Sulaimon, and Ajetunmobi Kolawole, have urged the government to offer urgent assistance to those impacted.
