Minimum Wage Increase in Lagos State

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a rise in the minimum wage for state employees.

In a recent discussion on Channels Television on October 16, he shared that the new minimum wage will be set at N85,000.

“I’m pleased to inform you that the minimum wage in Lagos, following discussions with our unions, is now N85,000,” noted Sanwo-Olu.

The governor pointed out that this decision wasn’t made to outdo other states, but rather it reflects Lagos’s economic situation and the high living expenses in the area.

“This isn’t about competition. I’m not claiming we pay more than others; it’s about what we can afford,” he clarified.

He recognized the distinctive economic challenges residents experience in Lagos, saying, “We are very much aware that living in Lagos comes with a higher cost of living.”

Additionally, Sanwo-Olu referred to earlier salary increments for civil servants in the state this year. He aims to raise the minimum wage to N100,000 soon, expressing optimism for the future.

“I hope to return in January with good news of increasing the minimum wage in Lagos to N100,000. This isn’t about overshadowing others, but about ensuring my people earn a living wage,”
he stated.
