The Nigerian senior female basketball team, D’Tigress, achieved a significant victory by defeating Canada 79-70 on Sunday, August 4, securing their first-ever spot in the Olympic quarterfinals.
In a thrilling match at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in France during the Paris 2024 Olympics, D’Tigress made history in the Women’s Basketball Tournament Group B.
The first quarter ended in a tie with both teams scoring 18 points each, setting a tense tone for the game.
Although trailing behind Canada by 41-37 in the second quarter, D’Tigress was determined to rewrite history and turned the game around, taking a commanding lead at 55-46.
The Nigerian team sealed their remarkable performance with a final score of 79-70, showcasing their determination and skill throughout the game.
Ezinne Kalu, the point guard and three-time Afrobasket champion, shined on the court, contributing 21 points to the team’s victory, displaying exceptional talent and leadership.
Head coach Rene Wakama expressed pride in the team’s achievement, as she had motivated the African champions to deliver an outstanding performance against Canada.
