An official statement signed by Eddy Megwa, Director of Information and Public Relations, addresses the issue.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted claims that a female Corps member passed away from being struck by lightning at the Abia State Orientation Camp in Umunna over the weekend.

“Despite a heavy downpour and thunderstorm in the morning, the injured female Corps member received immediate attention and stabilization from the camp’s medical team at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia,” the statement from Eddy Megwa clarified.

“The Corps member was promptly transferred to a hospital in Umuahia for necessary medical assessment.

“She is currently in stable condition and is responding well to treatment. The Corps member’s parents have been notified and have confirmed her stable state.

“The source of the misinformation did not verify the details with NYSC before spreading it.

“NYSC maintains a proactive stance towards the safety, health, and security of its Corps members at all times.

“The public, especially parents of Corps members at the Abia State Orientation Camp, can trust that their children’s security and welfare are ensured.

“Moreover, media personnel, particularly online bloggers, are urged to confirm information with NYSC before disseminating misleading and inaccurate content without factual basis concerning the organization.”
