A meeting is scheduled today between Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to address the ongoing crisis within the party.
Last week, Obi urged for peace after the NLC National Transition Committee, led by former NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar, invaded the LP headquarters in Abuja. The committee was established by the NLC Political Commission to reorganize the party following the rejection of Julius Abure’s re-election as the National Chairman of the party two months ago.
The disruption caused by the protest at the LP headquarters, where Omar and NLC supporters demanded entry, halted a meeting of the National Working Committee led by Abure. Obi intervened to call for peace between the LP and the NLC.
In an effort to address the crisis, Obi is set to meet with the NLC leadership, as confirmed by a senior NLC member.
Obi’s campaign spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, also verified the upcoming meeting and clarified that it will not be a joint meeting with Abure and the NWC members. Obi plans to engage with all concerned stakeholders individually to understand and address the party’s challenges.
