Nigeria’s President Tinubu Arrives for G20 Summit in Brazil
Nigeria’s leader, Bola Tinubu, has touched down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the 19th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit.
He arrived on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (3:03 a.m. on Monday in Nigeria) and was welcomed by Brazilian Ambassador Breno Costa, representing the Ministry of External Relations.
Accompanying him is a group of officials, including Yusuf Tuggar, the Foreign Affairs Minister; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity; Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; and Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
At the summit, Tinubu is expected to have bilateral conversations focused on promoting Nigeria’s socio-economic development initiatives.
Hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, this G20 summit revolves around the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Key topics include sustainable economic, social, and environmental development, reforms in global governance, climate change, and advancements in the digital economy.
The Brazilian presidency has prioritized urgent issues like the Israel–Hamas conflict and rising geopolitical tensions, particularly between the United States and China. The summit will solidify the outcomes of the presidency’s year-long agenda.
The G20 features 19 member nations, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK, and the US, along with the European Union.
In addition to the member countries, both the African Union and the European Union have been invited, highlighting Nigeria’s role in addressing commitments related to food security and the elimination of extreme poverty by 2030.
The summit will take place from November 18 to 19, culminating in the endorsement of agreements and strategies to confront global challenges.
