Scott Derrickson reveals DC movie he wants to helm

Fans are still reeling from the departure of co-writer/director Scott Derrickson from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and in a manner similar to James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, one fan took to Twitter to see if Derrickson could see himself taking on a Justice League Dark film, and the director revealed he would rather do a solo Constantine film.

John Constantine was created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette, Rich Veitch and John Totleben and first appeared in The Saga of Swamp Thing in June 1985 and went on to be the center of his own line entitled Hellblazer. He is best known in the comics as an occult detective, con man and working class warlock located in London who’s iconic traits include his blonde hair, which was based on the musician Sting, chain-smoking and a tan trenchcoat.

Constantine is essentially the Doctor Strange of the DC Universe, with the two sharing similar abilities and facing enemies of the mystic and demonic variety, albeit the Marvel character being a little more powerful and not having as shocking of a backstory or as cynical of personality. The Brit would go on to cross over with other comic lines, including Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman in early issues and Crisis on Infinite Earths, in which he was one of the few people who knew of and foresaw it ahead of time.

He made his media debut in the 2005 film Constantine starring Keanu Reeves in the titular role and despite mixed reviews from critics and fans upon release, was a box office hit and has since received more warm reviews from fans and Reeves has since stated he would love to return to the role. He would go on to make his small screen appearance in a solo series on NBC with Matt Ryan taking over the role, which received better reviews from critics and viewers alike but was cancelled after one season. Ryan’s portrayal was saved by crossing over into the Arrowverse with a cameo appearance in Arrow before becoming a regular in Legends of Tomorrow from season 3 to the present.

With many of the more bizarre stories and elements of Constantine’s source material and Derrickson having knocked it out of the park on Doctor Strange, it would be amazing to see the 53-year-old writer/director helm an adaptation of the character, be it with Reeves, Ryan or a new star in the role.
