FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, revealed that security agencies in the nation’s capital have identified a Senator as one of the financiers of the protest against poor governance and hunger in the country.
After an urgent FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday night, August 1, Wike shared that the Senator had contacted security personnel to escort a truck carrying food for the protesters.
He mentioned that the Senator would be summoned for interrogation by relevant authorities.
While acknowledging the right to protest in a democratic system, Wike emphasized that the protesters must adhere to the court’s directive limiting their demonstrations to the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
“We had stated earlier that we would provide updates to the media as we oversee the demonstrations of individuals protesting against bad governance and hunger in the country.
We uphold the principles of a democratic government and thus must abide by the law. It is crucial for protesters to act within the confines of the law to allow the government to address their concerns. Compliance with court orders is synonymous with upholding the rule of law.
We are actively working to improve the quality of life for the citizens. Yesterday’s court ruling should be noted. The court did not ban protests but rather restricted them to the National Stadium.
We had previously expressed concerns that some thugs might exploit the protests and instigate property damage within the FCT. Look at the incidents in certain states today. Consider the loss of lives. If such events occur in the FCT, the repercussions would be devastating. The international community also conducts its affairs here.
You witnessed the events today where certain individuals attempted to access the Eagle Square. While they were unsuccessful, we have received intelligence that they plan to cause property destruction and endanger lives tomorrow. The security forces will not tolerate this. We urge all protesters to gather at the MKO Abiola Stadium and conduct their demonstration in line with the court ruling.
We have received intelligence indicating that a Senator arranged for some security personnel to provide food for the protesters. This constitutes sponsorship. A Senator supplying food for protesters. The security agencies will summon the Senator to ascertain why they are supporting such activities against the government,” he stated.
